T.J. and Terri Fenske’s journey to create their stunning container home, Steelhaven, began during their time living abroad in Thailand, where they were exposed to the creative ways containers were being transformed into homes, restaurants, and hotels. Upon returning to the US, they decided to build their own unique and functional container home.

Combining different design ideas from various container homes and tiny living spaces, they chose three 40-foot high-cube containers to provide high ceilings and maximize the available space. The layout can comfortably house up to six individuals while also including a rooftop deck and ground-level patio to enhance the outdoor living experience. However, the build took longer than expected due to strict Michigan building codes and pandemic-related supply chain issues.

Steelhaven’s interior features a full-size kitchen, plenty of storage, and large windows that let in natural light to create a bright and open feel. The Scandinavian-inspired decor, with softwood tones and black accents, adds to the inviting ambiance of the space. While the exterior’s sleek black paint and cedar accent siding stand out against the surrounding forest.
