Understanding Shipping Container Prices and Costing

When it comes to purchasing a shipping container, one of the biggest questions customers have is “how much does a shipping container cost?” The answer isn’t always clear cut – factors such as size, condition, features, and delivery can all impact the price you will pay for your container. In this blog post, we’ll break down the various factors that influence shipping container prices so you can make an informed decision when to buy shipping containers.

Best Price Shipping Containers

Factors Influencing the Cost of Shipping Containers

1. Shipping Container Size

Shipping containers come in two sizes: 20-foot and 40-foot. The 20-foot is smaller and usually used for smaller shipments. The 40-foot is bigger and better for bigger loads.

Prices for shipping containers vary from place to place. The 40-foot container costs about 20%-30% more than the 20-foot container because it can carry more weight and hold more stuff.

2. Shipping Container Conditions

Shipping containers fall into three main categories based on their quality, appearance and functionality: New One-Trip, Used and Refurbished.

One-Trip shipping containers are those that have been used only once for transporting goods. Despite being used once, they are still in excellent condition with minimal wear and tear. They are known for being a cost-effective option that provides good quality. These containers have been labeled as IICL or Grade A.

Used shipping container for sale are previously used for shipping and may show signs of wear and tear. They might require repairs and maintenance before being suitable for other uses, but they remain structurally sound. Generally, used containers are the most economical choice.

Used Shipping containers that are used are categorized into different grades based on their condition:
  • Cargo Worthy which means the container has been thoroughly checked and approved for transportation via air, rail, or road. Although the exterior may have minor aesthetic damage, such as rust patches, dents, old markings, and original paint (with varying colors), these containers must pass a detailed survey to receive a valid CSC inspection sticker, especially if intended for export purposes.
  • Wind and Water Tight which are reliable containers guaranteed not to leak. However, these containers may show some signs of wear and tear from their past use in rough transportation services, such as rusty surfaces, dents, abrasions, and original paintwork.
  • As Is containers, typically the oldest, are those with severe damage that repairing them to make sure they are wind and water-tight would be too costly. These containers have holes in their internal and external structures, broken flooring, and other concerns. We generally advise customers against buying them unless they plan to use them for storing items that do not require structural soundness or an intact exterior, such as building materials, automobile parts, or tools that won’t rust.

Refurbished shipping containers go through a process where they are renovated to improve their condition and quality. This may include enhancements like new paint, flooring, doors, and other upgrades that enhance functionality and appearance. The price of refurbished containers will vary depending on the level of renovation required.

  • The typical refurbishment process involves painting the exterior of the container. This includes removing rust and priming any spots before painting. The roof and other exterior parts are also painted, and the locks, gaskets, and decals receive a new coat of paint as well.
  • Full refurbishment goes beyond the usual process and includes adding a new layer of paint to the interior.
  • Factory refurbishment refers to a thorough overhaul of a shipping container.
3. Type of Shipping Container

Some shipping containers have special features that make them cost more. Refrigerated containers come with temperature controls, so they are more expensive. Insulated containers are also more expensive because they use extra materials to keep the heat in or out. Think about what you need before you buy a container so you get the right one.

4. Cost of Delivery

It is important to pick the right supplier when you buy containers. The price will depend on how far away it is, how many containers you need, and when you need them delivered. The further away the container is from your home, the more money it will cost for delivery. It is important to check before buying to make sure that all of the delivery fees are included in your quote so that there are no surprises later.

5. Renting or Buying a Shipping Container

You might not think of it, but renting or purchasing a shipping container could have an impact on your budget. If you don’t need the container for extended periods, consider renting as this is usually more economical than buying; however keep in mind that if you plan to move and store the container multiple times, these costs can accumulate quickly. Make sure to do your research beforehand so you are aware of all associated fees when making your decision.

By understanding all of the factors that affect shipping container costs, you can make an informed decision when selecting a shipping container. It is important to pay attention to size, condition, features, and delivery fees so you get the best possible deal for your needs. With this knowledge in hand, you’ll be ready to find the perfect shipping
