A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Open and Close a Shipping Container

A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Open and Close a Shipping Container

Most shipping containers are built with hinged doors that have special locking mechanisms and a shipping container latch in place to protect the cargo inside. But, if you are new to the shipping industry, you may not know the right way to open or close a container. The process is complex and can be dangerous if done incorrectly.

This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions to learn how to open a storage container correctly, as well as some key tips and best practices for a successful operation.

How to Open a Shipping Container

Before you begin the opening of a shipping container, it is essential to confirm what type of item is inside and guarantee that the surface where it will be unloaded is level or on a loading dock. Taking this precautionary step safeguards everyone involved in the process. To assist you with unlocking your cargo box, follow these instructions:

1. Carefully Open Shipping Container Seals

1. Carefully Open Shipping Container Seals

Shipping containers are secured with seals to ensure no tampering occurs during transit. Cable and bolt locks (also known as bullet locks) are the most commonly used types. For many shipping containers, you’ll find the seal on the right door.

For containers that need extra security, a SecuraCam seal is added to the bottom of the left side of their right door. This protective measure ensures safety for items being transported to hazardous places or valuable cargo.

To open the lock, a bolt cutter is necessary. Use the instructions below to complete this task:

  • To ensure your safety, it is essential to secure yourself with appropriate protection – this includes wearing a set of protective glasses and durable work gloves.
  • Grasp the bolt cutter handles as if you are holding a tray, with each hand on its respective handle.
  • To ensure a tight and secure seal, place the open jaws of your tool around the part of the container lid that is thinnest.
  • Put pressure on the bolt cutter until the seal opens.

2. Unlatch first the right Door of the shipping container by lifting both latches upward.

When opening the container door, remember two things. First, don’t open both doors at the same time or they will get stuck in the middle. Second, always start with the right door because it covers part of the left door.

Lift and secure the latches to an upright position, then firmly grab both handles and pull. When opening, make sure you keep your balance by having one foot slightly ahead of the other with a slight bend in each knee.

3. Open the left door by flipping both latches up.

Once you unlock the door on your right, ensure that nothing falls. Repeat the process for the left-hand door; raise both latches and free them from any restraints.

3. Open the left door by flipping both latches up.

How to Close Shipping Container Doors

How to Close Shipping Container Doors

1. Start to Close the Left door of the Shipping Container Firmly and Securely.

  • Pull the locking bar handles on the outside of the metal container away from the door towards you.
  • Push the cargo door closed and make sure that all of the latches and bars are properly aligned. The locks and latches need to line up perfectly for it to shut.
  • Push the handles to the left until they stay in place. Flip the tabs on the locking bars down.
  • Turn the cane bolt on the inside of the container to the left. Keep turning until it drops into its special hole.

2. Proceed into closing the Right door of the Shipping Container

After successfully locking the left door, close and secure the right one to complete the task.

  • Pull the locking bar handles away from the door and towards you.
  • Grab the handles and close the steel container door. Make sure the bottom cams and bars line up properly.
  • Move the handles to the right so they stay closed.
  • Push the tabs on the locking bars down.
  • Move the slide bolt to the left.

TIPS FOR OPENING AND CLOSING A CONTAINER

Now that you have learned the basics of opening and closing a shipping container, here are some additional precautions to ensure your safety as well as maintain the unit’s condition.

  • To protect yourself from potential harm to your back, neck, or shoulders, use the power of your leg as you slowly open or close the doors.
  • To minimize the risk of warping your flooring, make sure to put the container on level ground.
  • Carefully assess any unusual pressure or resistance from the container door, as well as detect any scraping sounds of moving objects when you open it up. This could be a warning signal that your contents have shifted during transit and could potentially collapse once opened.
