Shipping Container Physical Hub in Omaha
John Cohorst and Holly Kranker, who recently received a Public Impact Grant, took the next step in their CAR>GO project by making an important delivery. They plan to renovate a generously donated shipping container as the physical base for this innovative concept – Community Activated Resource on the GO. This mobile shared workspace will be used by artists, architects, designers, and engineers alike to collaborate on neighborhood projects or discuss infrastructure-related topics while exchanging ideas with one another.
By utilizing CAR>GO, Amplify Arts is revolutionizing traditional designs by constructing a space that has been minimized in size and made of recycled materials. All energy used to power the site will be sourced sustainably. To help them realize this radical vision, KANEKO – their ally within Omaha’s flourishing art community – graciously offered up their outdoor area as the future home of Amplify Art’s shipping container project.
After their renovations are completed, John and Holly will be welcoming applications from others who desire to use the space. They invite anyone in the community to join them during this process by attending skill shares or workdays; more details about these events will come soon!

Kail Walker, a local real estate agent, and his team are undertaking an ambitious project to provide Omaha with affordable housing and increased sustainability in the form of container homes. Currently, these types of homes are being built in the south–cities like Austin and Dallas, as well as Arizona cities, included–so why not start this project in Omaha? Doing so will enable the city to seize its moment under the spotlight and increase its visibility!

Metropolitan Community College will soon launch courses on sustainability through a remarkable, high-tech indoor farm; the Freight Farm. This 320-square-foot shipping container has been transformed into an environmentally friendly vertical climate-controlled farm that runs solely on solar power and requires merely five gallons of water daily to sustain 13,000 plants!
Justin Caniglia, MCC’s Continuing Education Coordinator, explains that the Freight Farm is a cutting-edge farm operating on computer systems. “We have total control over our dashboard,” he adds. Daphne Cook, Director of Continuing Education at MCC confirms that it’s the first of its kind in Omaha to be used as an educational program classroom!
MCC’s new Certification for the Sustainability program, coupled with other learning opportunities available to all ages, will be significantly enhanced by the presence of a shipping container. As Cook expressed: “Most people won’t have their own personal shipping container. But they can still access its concepts and learn how to apply them in the comforts of home through education.”
