Starbucks Portland Shipping Container
Starbucks has launched its innovative modular stores in Portland that are constructed from reconfigured shipping containers. The Seattle-based retailer chose Rose City to host one of their new store designs located on Northeast 122nd Avenue near the greenway, having previously tested this concept in Tukwila, Washington.
This store is the first to feature customized bike racks and landscaping for those who prefer walking or biking. Moreover, it offers a drive-through option too! Although modularly constructed off-site, this Starbucks location is meant to stay permanent in its current spot – according to an official spokesperson from Starbucks.
Their design team worked diligently to craft a store aesthetic that reflects the unique culture of Portland. From their world-renowned bike lifestyle, temperate climate, and animal-friendly environment, to their commitment to sustainability and love for coffee – nothing was overlooked in creating this special installation.
Shipping Container Port Modernization in Portland
The Port of Portland was recently awarded several grants, amounting to a grand total of $42 million in infrastructure improvements for Oregon’s only marine container terminal – Terminal 6. Most notably, the Connect Oregon grant program administered by the Oregon Department of Transportation contributed an impressive $7.3 million to this endeavor; its mission is to support and sustain non-highway modes of transportation so that the state’s entire transportation system remains reliable, comprehensive, and efficient.

Portland Shipping Container Retail Space
Last week saw the grand opening of Portland’s first ever Black Box – a single-story building comprising repurposed shipping containers and owned by Dayton Group. This unique structure, crafted offsite by SnapSpace Solutions in Brewer, contains an impressive five startups all with 320 sq ft of space each to call their own. All this was made possible following the purchase of it from Jed Harris prior to its completion.
Harris of Cotton Street Holdings initially dreamed up the concept, according to a news release. This five-unit incubator space permits tenants to experiment with their products without undertaking a lengthy lease agreement and is the first retail location for all of them, as noted in the statement. All units have wifi and french doors opening onto Washington Street, the interiors are sheet-rocked, with wood floors, and there is also a common patio and back unit with bathrooms and storage. While the building is unique, the tenants said the opportunity to have their first retail space is important.
The Black Box was created as a way to help small businesses grow and develop in the Portland area. It’s an excellent example of leveraging existing infrastructure, such as old shipping containers, to create something new. Hopefully, this trend will continue, providing even more opportunities for small business owners in the city.
