SHIPPING CONTAINER CHASSIS

TYPES, DIMENSIONS & USES

Shipping container chassis are specialized trailers that are designed to transport shipping containers. The most common container chassis transport 20’, 40’, and 45-foot containers.   Longer shipping container chassis are also available and these can carry the larger 48’ and 53’ domestic shipping containers.

A shipping container chassis is a steel framed “skeletal” trailer with no bed.  It will still have an axle(s) and tires and may also be equipped with weight sensors, LED lighting and GPS tracking.

Axles are critical components in determining the load capacity of a chassis. Specifically, a two-axle chassis can support 20-foot and 40-foot containers, but if the containers are heavier than 36,000 pounds for the 20-foot variety or 44,000 pounds for the 40-foot containers, a tri-axle chassis is usually necessary.

What are the the Different Types of Shipping Container Chassis?

Container Chassis are a type of trailer used to transport shipping containers. They come in a variety of types with each designed for different container sizes and weight requirements.

1. Extendable Container Chassis – An extendable container chassis as its name signifies can change its size to accommodate the different container sizes.  The most common extendable chassis can carry 40’ and 45’ long containers. These chassis can also carry 1 or 2 smaller 20’ shipping containers.

2. Common Container Chassis – These are the most basic type of container chassis.  They come in fixed sizes with 1, 2 or 3 axles depending on load weight requirements.  These are the least expensive container chassis.

The loading and unloading of a shipping container from a chassis is done using container handling equipment. This equipment includes overhead cranes, specifically designed container handlers and large forklifts. All shipping containers are built with forged metal corner casting installed on each corner which the cranes and container handlers use to lift the containers.  Some containers have forklift pockets. These forklift pockets should only be used to move empty containers.

Other ways to move your container

Container chassis are a great way to transport containers especially if they are loaded.  However if you need to have your empty shipping container delivered to the ground, there are other equipment options available.

1. Tilt Bed Container Trailer– A tilt bed trailer is designed to carry heavy equipment like shipping containers, excavators and other large equipment.  It has a specialized frame, hydraulics and suspension system. The trailer hydraulic system allows the bed to raise and lower at an angle.   This angle makes it possible to load and unload empty containers from and to the ground with the help of a winch.    The air suspension system makes it possible to adjust the height of the trailer bed which can help with loading and unloading for example at warehouse docks or for transloading containers.

2. Rollback truck – Rollback trucks are also called rollback tow trucks. These delivery trucks are capable of carrying cars, trucks, and shipping containers. Most rollback trucks can only carry 20′ shipping containers or smaller due to the fact most rollback trucks have smaller truck beds.  These smaller trucks are more maneuverable which makes them a good option for delivering 20’ shipping containers in smaller tight locations with limited access.

3. Flatbed trailer – Most people are familiar with flatbed trailers since we all see them on the highway carry all types of bulk freight. Similar to a chassis they have a heavy duty frame, axles, brakes and lights, but they will also have a large deck or bed. This bed is not covered which allows large bulky freight to be easily loaded.   The high availability makes flatbed trailers the least expensive method to transport empty containers long distances.   Empty containers must be properly secured to the bed using heavy duty rated straps and chains to prevent any accidents.   When moving high cube containers which are 9’ 6” tall a specialized low boy or step deck trailer is required to prevent height issues on the highway.  If a regular flatbed trailer is used to carry a high cube container it will likely cause an accident because it might hit things like bridges and power cables.

Tip: Remember that the length of the chassis should be greater than the size of the container. Place the load/container at the center to keep the trailer stable and balanced.

There are various container chassis models on the market.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a shipping container chassis?

A shipping container chassis is a specialized trailer designed to transport shipping containers. It provides the structural support and stability needed to safely carry the weight of a loaded container during transportation.

How does a shipping container chassis work?

A shipping container chassis typically consists of a steel frame with twist locks or corner castings that securely hold the container in place. The chassis is attached to a tractor or truck, allowing for easy transportation of the container from one location to another.

Can container chassis be customized?

Yes, container chassis can be customized to meet specific transportation needs. Customizations may include adjustable chassis length, twist lock configurations, and additional features like hydraulic systems for lifting containers.

What material are shipping containers made from?

Shipping are primarily made from a special type of steel called corten steel or weathering steel. Corten steel is known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, making it suitable for withstanding harsh weather conditions during shipping and storage

Are there any regulations or standards for container chassis?

Yes, container chassis must comply with relevant transportation regulations and industry standards. These standards ensure the safety and compatibility of the chassis with shipping containers and transportation infrastructure.
